Ride Review - Bilstein 5100 on a 2020 Ranger FX4

This is our stage 1 for the 2019+ Ford Ranger, we’ll be diving into many different suspension combinations; changing out the shocks, control arms, leaf springs, and other parts. Shop your shock options: 2019+ Ford Ranger Shock Buying Guide Backstory As of this writing, most big brands have made something for the new Ranger; Bilstein, Fox, Icon, King, Rancho, Radflo, Eibach all have coilovers and shocks in varying feature-sets. Shock Shakedown at King of the Hammers 2022

The Johnson Valley desert is as good as any to shake down some new vehicle upgrades, specifically 4 new suspension setups. But not the crazy race-setups on a lot of these rock crawlers and race-rigs. We’re talking basic upgrades for the everyday-driver-guy. Off the shelf, bolt-on-basics. Change the game with a few hundred dollars basic. We’ve been to this event a number of times, and each year it keeps getting bigger and bigger. One of the things we were most impressed with this year, which was brand new, is the FPV drone coverage of nearly every major Hammer obstacle, sometimes...

Bilstein 5100s Upgrade the Toyota Tacoma

Bilstein is one of the most well known brands of shocks out there. ICON Stage 8 - 60k Mile Review & What's Next

The Shock Surplus 2006 Tacoma 4x4 is going under the knife again, getting the suspension gutted for the 5th time. The most recent setup from ICON Vehicle Dynamics featured the 2.5 Coilovers with CDCV adjustable reservoirs, along with 2.5 CDCV reservoir rear shocks, the RXT rear leaf pack (one of the first off the line), and hydraulic bump stops. This entire system has been fantastic, and will be hard to beat. Our previous experiences included the Bilstein 5100 adjustable height struts, the Fox 2.0 coilovers, and then the ICON system. The most significant differences when moving into the ICON setup...

Overlanding Shock Research

Whatever your primary form of overlanding/offroading is, the equipment consideration should match that purpose. Despite the latest trends in expensive race-level suspension offerings, most of these kits are overblown for the purpose in which they are used. A set of Bilstein 5100s or Old Man Emu shocks will sustain your vehicle for a very long time, over fire roads, maintained camp sites, and easy trails for many years. You do not need a $3000 suspension system to carry and support weekend-camping gear.
