Ride Review - Rancho RS7000MT - Jeep Wrangler JLU Rubicon

The Shock Surplus team decided to mix things up on the Wrangler JLU Rubicon. You might be wondering, why take off the Bilstein 8100s with External Bypass and Ride Adjustment? Lets dive in and get reacquainted with our mission. Its not always about running the best, otherwise our rigs would all have 2.5 or 3.0 shocks with kitted-out suspensions. That’s not the case though, we take the upgrade journey seriously, and know there’s a huge range of budgets and use-cases. With Rancho’s latest redesign of their 7000 series, we had to take a look. Rancho had a previous model of...

Shock Shakedown at King of the Hammers 2022

The Johnson Valley desert is as good as any to shake down some new vehicle upgrades, specifically 4 new suspension setups. But not the crazy race-setups on a lot of these rock crawlers and race-rigs. We’re talking basic upgrades for the everyday-driver-guy. Off the shelf, bolt-on-basics. Change the game with a few hundred dollars basic. We’ve been to this event a number of times, and each year it keeps getting bigger and bigger. One of the things we were most impressed with this year, which was brand new, is the FPV drone coverage of nearly every major Hammer obstacle, sometimes...

Pure 4x4 Basecamp 3.0 SoCal Recap

Basecamp 3.0 arrived in Big Bear with a bang! Over 300 vehicles showed up at Holcomb Ranch to get dirty, party, run trails, and talk shop. When we saw all the rigs rolling out of Tahoe from Basecamp 2.0 a few months back, we knew we couldn’t miss this one. People from all over the country showed up to Basecamp; Washington, Florida, the midwest, Norcal - “We dont have these mountains back east!” It was great putting faces to names; Baja Designs, VTX Wheels, Yotamafia, American Adventure Lab, Long Beach Overland, CORVA and a bunch of others. Wayne from Suspension...

Keep Hammering - King of the Hammers 2021 Unleashed

Every winter some of the most rugged off-road manufacturers in the world converge on a small plot of land in the southern california desert for a unique race that challenges contenders across high speed environments and through technical rock gardens that will crush even the sturdiest rigs. Ultra4’s King of the Hammers race once again returned to Johnson Valley, CA for a week of racing in numerous classes including almost every off-road vehicle available; motos, UTVs, stock class, Ultra4 trucks, and trophy trucks. While this race is probably not known to most, and shunned by others, only true enthusiasts will...

Upgrading the Jeep Wrangler JL’s Ride Control on Trail

With the fresh heaping of snow that pounded the Big Bear mountains, we took the opportunity to hit some off-road trails for a before-and-after ride test with our friend Eric’s new Jeep Wrangler JL. Gold Mountain trail was the first destination to crawl some aggressive obstacles, and then on to 3N16, the famous easy-going trail that runs through the length of Big Bear. Eric's 2019 Wrangler JL is equipped with a Metal Cloak 3.5” lift kit, sitting on their proprietary Rock Sport twin-tube shocks. He didn’t have any complaints about the current ride quality on the Jeep, but wanted to...
